dailyloe.com – New York Islanders defenseman Matthew Schaefer has been named a finalist for the Calder Trophy. This award is presented annually to the NHL’s top rookie. Schaefer, the first pick in the 2025 draft, is competing against Ivan Demidov of the Montreal Canadiens and Beckett Sennecke of the Anaheim Ducks.
Schaefer, 18, is considered the favorite for the award. He scored 23 goals, tied for the most among rookies, and added 36 assists, totaling 59 points. His performance broke Phil Housley’s record for points by an 18-year-old defenseman.
In addition to setting records, Schaefer matched Brian Leetch’s record for goals scored by a rookie defenseman. He was also effective defensively, skating to a plus-13 rating and averaging 24:41 in ice time, with 1:06 spent on the penalty kill.
Schaefer’s presence revitalized the Islanders, who contended for a playoff spot in the Eastern Conference this season. Islanders coach Pete DeBoer noted Schaefer’s defensive awareness, stating, “He’s a really, really special player.” Schaefer was also considered for a Team Canada roster spot for the Winter Olympics but ultimately missed the cut.
Ivan Demidov, 20, also had a strong season, scoring 19 goals and 43 assists for 62 points. Beckett Sennecke, another finalist, showcased his skills as well. The finalists were announced during the NHL draft lottery.
