CBS Sports’ John Breech outlined the scenario on April 22, 2026. The Falcons currently lack a first-round pick in this year’s draft.
Breech wrote that the Falcons would likely be open to this deal for two reasons. First, they do not have a first-round pick this year, so this trade would get them back into the opening round. Second, Pitts is set to play under the franchise tag, which will pay him $15 million in 2026.
If the Falcons trade Pitts away, that will immediately free up $15 million in cap space. A first-round pick plus $15 million in cap space is a significant gain for Atlanta. There is also the lucrative long-term deal that the Falcons will not have to pay Pitts.
Pitts had a strong 2025 season but has disappointed overall, according to the report. The Chiefs need to find a successor for Travis Kelce, who has lost a step and a half since his prime. So far, Kansas City is the only team connected to a potential Pitts trade with the Falcons.
One earlier scenario had Atlanta scoring second and fourth-round picks from Kansas City. That deal would be one the Falcons should make if offered. Breech’s proposal is even better, netting a first-round pick.
Some NFL team will take a chance on the flashes Pitts has shown and give him elite tight end money. There is no reason Atlanta has to be that team, though. If any team offers a first for Pitts, even the Seahawks at No. 32, then Ian Cunningham, Matt Ryan and company should jump at the chance.
