dailyloe.com – Italy will host a new ATP Tour grass-court tournament starting in 2028. The Italian Tennis and Padel Federation purchased the rights to a 250-level event from Brussels. Federation president Angelo Binaghi announced the news on Tuesday. The event will serve as a Wimbledon tune-up.
The tournament is currently held in October. Binaghi said there is still time to decide its final location. He noted climate reasons will likely place it in northern Italy. The iconic San Siro stadium in Milan is a potential venue.
Binaghi referenced the Madrid Open’s use of Real Madrid’s stadium. He said, ‘For once, we wouldn’t be the first to do it.’ Italy previously hosted a WTA grass-court event in Gaiba. That tournament ran from 2022 to 2024.
The move adds to Italy’s growing tennis portfolio. The country already hosts the ATP Finals and Davis Cup finals. The rise of top-ranked Jannik Sinner has fueled this expansion. The new event continues Italy’s significant influence in tennis.[]
