dailyloe.com – A major winter storm is set to impact the Upper Midwest starting Wednesday night. The system will bring significant snow and ice through Friday morning.

Light wintry precipitation is possible south of US-2 this morning. Snow remains the dominant type north of the Iron Range.

Dry air is inhibiting ground accumulation for now. The bulk of this initial precipitation will move out by midday.

Scattered mixed rain and snow showers will linger behind it. An isolated stronger shower may briefly reduce visibility.

High temperatures today will only reach the 20s and 30s Fahrenheit. Lows tonight will drop into the teens and 20s.

Clouds and breezy conditions are expected for most of Wednesday. Winds from the east-northeast could gust up to 30 mph.

The main storm system is forecast to arrive after 5 PM Wednesday. Snow will move in from south to north, becoming heavy at times.

Warmer air aloft will likely cause a transition to sleet and freezing rain. This shift will begin in southeastern areas overnight.

The mix line will continue moving northwest through Thursday. It is expected to halt near the US-53 corridor in Minnesota.

The exact track of the low-pressure system will determine final amounts. Significant travel impacts are increasingly likely from Wednesday night onward.[]
