dailyloe.com – On May 3, 2026, three firefighters were honored at the International Firefighters’ Day Memorial service in Kings Park.
They were recognized for their dedicated service and sacrifice in the line of duty. The event saw hundreds gather to pay tribute to the families and legacies of Western Australia’s fallen firefighters.
The names added to the Fallen Firefighters’ Honour Roll include Gregory Mark Mudie, Damian Keiran Buswell, and Denis Jung.
Gregory Mark Mudie served as a volunteer firefighter for 27 years with the West River Bush Fire Service. He died while battling a fire near Ravensthorpe in December 2025.
Damian Keiran Buswell worked as a career firefighter in Welshpool and Albany. He dedicated 32 years to emergency services and succumbed to cancer in 2022.
Denis Jung joined the Carnarvon Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service in 2001 and later served as an aviation firefighter at Perth Airport. He also died of cancer in 2022 at the age of 39.
Under Western Australia’s Presumptive Legislation, firefighters diagnosed with certain cancers are presumed to have acquired these conditions due to their service. This legislation provides financial support for treatment and influences the addition of names to the Honour Roll.
Minister for Emergency Services Paul Papalia stated there are now 103 names on the honour roll at the Firefighters’ Memorial in Kings Park. He emphasized the significance of remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice.
“Names of individuals who made the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of their friends, family and community,” Papalia said. “We will remember them.”
Emergency Services Commissioner Darren Klemm expressed deep respect for the courage and commitment of the fallen firefighters. He highlighted the importance of supporting each other during times of loss.
