Mayor Blangiardi stated the action was taken out of an abundance of caution. He urged the public to take the situation seriously and avoid unnecessary travel. Residents were advised to stay home and make preparations in case conditions worsen overnight.
The closure suspends many public services and shuts down numerous facilities. This includes all Driver Licensing Centers, Satellite City Halls, and municipal golf courses. The Honolulu Zoo, Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve, and all botanical gardens are also closed.
All city parks and recreational facilities are included in the shutdown. This encompasses athletic fields, swimming pools, and outdoor courts. Most gymnasiums are closed, except for those designated as emergency shelters.
Four emergency shelters remain open across Oahu for those needing refuge. These are located at Wahiawā, Mānoa Valley, Wai‘anae, and Kāne‘ohe District Parks. The shelters are open to both residents and visitors.
