Davis has been designated ‘champion in recess’ by the WBA due to inactivity and domestic violence allegations from his ex-partner, Courtney Rossel. These accusations led to his removal from a planned exhibition match against Jake Paul last November.
Recently, Davis hinted at a return to the ring, mentioning Isaac ‘Pitbull’ Cruz as a potential opponent at 140lbs. If he aims to regain his old WBA title, Davis may be mandated to face the WBA’s No.1 contender at 135lbs, Floyd Schofield.
In pursuit of a fight with Davis, Schofield’s father and trainer has stated that talks are ongoing for a match in July. Oscar De La Hoya, the promoter for Schofield, verified these discussions during a media event with Fight Hub TV.
De La Hoya acknowledged the challenge for the 23-year-old Schofield, stating, “There will be real talks happening very soon. If ‘Kid Austin’ wants to go after ‘Tank’ then, me as a promoter, [that’s] what I have to get him.”
He expressed his concerns about Schofield’s readiness, suggesting that he would prefer one more fight before facing Davis. However, he indicated that he would support Schofield if he wanted to fight immediately.
De La Hoya remarked, “It wouldn’t be the right decision in my eyes, but if the father and the kid want it, then that’s what I’ll have to push for.”
He also mentioned hearing that Davis intends to fight in the third quarter of this year. Schofield, who last fought in June, achieved a career-best victory by defeating former world champion Tevin Farmer in the first round.
