dailyloe.com – Former U.S. Congressman Bill Posey died on Saturday, May 9, 2025, at the age of 78. He served Florida’s 8th District for 16 years, from 2008 until his retirement in 2025.

His successor, Rep. Mike Haridopolos, confirmed his passing and praised Posey’s commitment to public service. Posey died at Holmes Regional Medical Center in Melbourne, surrounded by his family.

Posey leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Katie, and his daughters, Cathi and Pamela. He was known for his strong constituent service and passion for auto racing.

Prior to his departure from Washington D.C., he expressed amazement at his time in the capital. In a conversation in May 2024, he indicated he was ready to slow down after announcing he would not seek reelection.

During his career, Posey endorsed Haridopolos, who subsequently won the U.S. House seat. Posey reflected on his experience, saying, “There’s an old saying that sometimes the rollercoaster moves so fast, you can’t enjoy the ride.”

He recalled his time meeting notable figures like Netanyahu and spending a weekend at Camp David, marveling at his journey from Rockledge.

First elected to Rockledge City Council in 1976, Posey later served in the state legislature before his tenure in Congress. His district included Brevard, Indian River, and parts of Orange County.

Notably, Posey passed away on the same day as the annual National Kidney Footprints in the Sand Walk at Cocoa Beach, an event he and his wife supported.
