Eagles to Approach 2026 Draft as if A.J. Brown Will Be Traded

The Philadelphia Eagles are reportedly planning for the 2026 NFL Draft under the assumption star receiver A.J. Brown will be traded, with the Patriots seen as front-runners for a potential post-June 1 deal.

dailyloe.com – Star wide receiver A.J. Brown remains with the Philadelphia Eagles as another work week concludes. Recent reports from NFL insiders indicate a potential trade deal for Brown could be finalized after June 1. That specific date is key for the Eagles to gain salary cap relief from such a move.

If Philadelphia traded Brown before June 1, it would face a $43.5 million dead cap hit. A trade executed after June 1 would ensure the Eagles only take a $16 million hit to their salary cap. The New England Patriots are reportedly the front-runners to eventually acquire Brown. CBS Sports’ Jonathan Jones and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport have both echoed this sentiment.

Jonathan Jones wrote that the Patriots remain the frontrunner to acquire the All Pro receiver. Jones cited Brown’s decision not to speak publicly about his current situation with the Eagles. Sources theorized to Jones that Brown may understand a deal will take place this summer. Making a public stink does not help his position, Jones reported sources as saying.

From the Eagles’ perspective, the organization is moving forward as if Brown will not be with the team for Week 1. ESPN’s Jeff Darlington reported the Eagles will operate in next week’s 2026 NFL Draft with that mindset. Darlington said this on ESPN’s ‘Get Up’ Friday morning. He stated the team will operate as if they eventually will be moving A.J. Brown.

This year’s NFL Draft is particularly deep when it comes to wide receiver prospects. Philadelphia currently holds the No. 23 overall pick in the first round. The team also has the No. 54 pick in the second round. Considering the reporting, the franchise seems likely to heavily consider selecting a wide receiver.

Jeff Darlington noted that things can change regarding A.J. Brown’s situation. However, the reporter emphasized the Eagles’ current operational stance. The team is preparing for the draft under the assumption a trade will happen. This planning shapes their strategy for the upcoming player selection event.
