dailyloe.com – The Los Angeles Dodgers have decided to select the contract of right-hander Wyatt Mills, as reported by Sonja Chen of MLB.com. To clear space on the active roster, Paul Gervase is being optioned. This move coincides with closer Edwin Díaz being transferred to the 60-day injured list, according to Bill Plunkett of the Orange County Register.

Wyatt Mills has pitched 42 innings in the Major Leagues, all during 2021-22 with the Mariners and Royals. His performance resulted in a 6.21 ERA, a 19.3% strikeout rate, and a 10.4% walk rate. These statistics are considered unspectacular and are now four years old.

Mills missed the 2023-24 season due to Tommy John surgery in July 2023. He recently returned to pitch for the Red Sox’ Triple-A affiliate in 2025, where he logged 52 innings over 32 appearances, including seven starts. During this time, he achieved a solid 3.12 ERA, though his peripherals, such as a 13.3% walk rate, were less encouraging.

In 2026, Mills has shown improved performance for the Dodgers’ top affiliate, posting a 3.26 ERA and a 2.05 FIP in 19 1/3 innings. His promotion is intended to provide the Dodgers with a fresh arm, particularly in light of Gervase’s recent performance, where he threw 50 pitches in three relief innings against the Braves.

Gervase, recalled on May 8th, made only one appearance in the Majors this year. Mills is expected to serve as a low-leverage, long-relief option for the Dodgers. It’s plausible that Mills’ selection may be temporary, with a possibility of being designated for assignment and put on waivers.

Mills has one option year remaining, allowing the Dodgers to move him down without exposing him to waivers. Meanwhile, Edwin Díaz’s transfer to the 60-day injured list was anticipated. He had been placed on the 15-day injured list on April 20 due to loose bodies in his right elbow and underwent surgery for their removal shortly after.

Díaz is not expected to return until the latter half of the season, making his transfer to the 60-day IL unsurprising as a 40-man roster spot is required. This marks the second occasion Díaz has been on the 60-day IL during his career, the first instance occurring in 2023 when he sustained a patellar tendon injury in his right knee during that year’s World Baseball Classic.
