The lockdown forces characters in conflict into close quarters. This is particularly impactful for the love triangle involving Dr. Amy Larsen, her ex-husband Dr. Michael Hamda, and her new love Dr. Jake Heller. Kligman explains that Amy knows you can love two people. The question of who you should be with can plague you that way. Kligman notes that Gina and Richard used to be friends, much like Amy and Richard. It is always interesting now that Richard is back and not really welcome. His interactions with everyone are a key point of tension. The finale explores these strained relationships under extreme pressure.
Amy continues to slowly regain her memories after the series-opening car accident. In the first part of the finale, Amy’s memories are preying on her. Traumatic events frequently trigger memories of past trauma for her throughout the season. Kligman warns that to quash those memories, she does something that may be responsible for some dire personal consequences.
The hour also introduces trauma and cardiothoracic surgeon Dr. Ben Grant. The character is played by Blair Underwood from ‘L.A. Law’. Dr. Grant is also under lockdown with the hospital staff. His debut adds a new dynamic to the confined environment of the finale.[]
