dailyloe.com – During Game 1 against Carolina, the Flyers moved Denver Barkey to center to enhance their offense. This strategic shift occurred late in the game, and head coach Rick Tocchet later praised Barkey, stating he was the team’s best player. As Noah Cates is sidelined for the series, Barkey is expected to have more opportunities in the middle.

Team president Keith Jones suggested Tocchet try Barkey at center. Tocchet acknowledged Jones’s input, noting that Jones had scouted Barkey and advocated for his abilities. The adjustment comes as Barkey, who previously played center in the OHL, is now being utilized differently in the NHL.

Barkey, standing at 5-foot-10 and weighing 171 pounds, was initially projected as a winger. However, Tocchet has commended his aggressive style of play, which has proven effective even with his smaller stature. Barkey emphasized the importance of winning battles in the corners as a center and maintaining good body positioning against larger opponents.

Noah Cates, who also transitioned from winger to center, has become the Flyers’ primary defensive pivot. Cates expressed confidence in Barkey, noting his intelligence and skill on the puck. Cates highlighted Barkey’s ability to make smart plays with space in the middle, which could greatly benefit the team.
