dailyloe.com – Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong announced significant layoffs affecting 14% of the workforce. This decision impacts nearly 700 employees based on previous counts. The layoffs are part of a strategy to adapt to the AI era and streamline operations.

Armstrong emphasized that the layoffs are partly due to a downturn in the crypto market. However, the primary focus is on flattening the leadership structure. This change aims to enhance operational efficiency and speed.

The company will replace traditional managers with ‘player-coaches.’ These leaders will oversee teams while actively contributing as individuals. Furthermore, Coinbase plans to establish ‘AI-native pods’ utilizing its most AI proficient employees.

Each pod may consist of one-person teams directing agents that handle tasks typically assigned to engineers, designers, and product managers. Armstrong stated, “We are not just reducing headcount and cutting costs, we’re fundamentally changing how we operate: rebuilding Coinbase as an intelligence, with humans around the edge aligning it.”

Following the layoffs, Coinbase’s leadership structure will have no more than five layers beneath Armstrong’s position. This flattening is expected to mitigate inefficiencies, as noted by Armstrong: “Layers slow things down and create coordination tax.”

Armstrong has been a strong proponent of AI technologies. He secured GitHub Copilot and Cursor licenses for all engineers and urged quick onboarding with these tools. Those who failed to adapt quickly faced consequences, including termination.

Armstrong remarked, “Some of them had a good reason, because they were just getting back from some trip or something. Some of them didn’t, and they got fired.” Over the past year, he observed that AI has significantly improved productivity, allowing engineers to complete tasks in days that previously took weeks.

Non-technical employees at Coinbase are also leveraging AI to automate workflows and write code. These transformations were pivotal in the decision to lay off employees. Coinbase has not yet responded to requests for further comment on these developments.

As Coinbase implements these changes, it is also increasing the employee-to-manager ratio. Each manager will now be responsible for approximately 15 employees, reflecting the company’s commitment to a leaner operational model.
