The decision came a day after Alcaraz needed wrist treatment during his opening match. He defeated Otto Virtanen 6-4, 6-2 in that contest. Alcaraz was scheduled to face Tomas Machac in the round of 16 on Thursday.
The 22-year-old lost his No. 1 ranking after Sinner beat him in the Monte Carlo Masters final last Sunday. Alcaraz’s next scheduled tournaments are the Madrid Open and the Italian Open. He will then defend his French Open title.
With Alcaraz’s withdrawal, Tomas Machac advances directly to the quarterfinals. Machac will now play the winner of the match between Andrey Rublev and Lorenzo Sonego.[]
