The Houston Astros have officially reinstated closer Josh Hader from the injured list, marking a significant return for the multi-time All-Star. Hader is expected to be active for tonight’s game, as confirmed by manager Joe Espada.

As reported by MLB Trade Rumors, the Astros facilitated Hader’s return by moving Carlos Correa to the 60-day injured list, thereby opening a necessary 40-man roster spot. Additionally, infielder Braden Shewmake was placed on the 10-day injured list due to a right adductor strain, and outfielder Zach Cole has been recalled to fill the roster void.

Josh Hader’s Injury Journey

Hader’s 2025 season was cut short last August due to a capsule strain in his left shoulder. Though he did not require surgery, he was hopeful of returning for a potential postseason run, which ultimately did not materialize as the Astros fell short of playoff contention.

Following the end of the season, the Astros planned for a normal offseason for Hader. General manager Dana Brown noted in November that Hader had already thrown off a mound multiple times and the organization aimed for his return by Opening Day.

However, complications arose when Hader experienced biceps pain during spring training, which was diagnosed as tendinitis. This condition ruled him out for the season opener, and he has missed over two months of competition as a result.

Performance During Rehabilitation

Throughout his minor league rehabilitation stint, Hader demonstrated strong performances. In his first seven appearances, he allowed just one run on four hits and one walk while striking out 11 in seven innings.

Despite a challenging final two outings, where he surrendered five runs (three earned) on four hits and two walks, Hader’s overall numbers have shown promise. His minor league ERA stands at 4.15, which reflects the ups and downs of his recovery process.

It’s noteworthy that Hader’s sinker has averaged 93.9 mph in Triple-A, a decrease from last season’s 95.5 mph. While this drop in velocity could raise concerns, it is expected as he continues to build strength after his injury setbacks.

Impact of Hader’s Return

Hader’s activation is crucial for the Astros as they aim to bolster their bullpen. His experience and skills as one of the league’s top closers can significantly impact the team’s performance as they navigate the season ahead.

With Hader back in the lineup, the Astros are expected to see improved late-game performances. His presence could enhance the team’s chances of securing crucial victories as they progress through the season.
