The new AirPods are expected to feature built-in infrared (IR) cameras, enhancing AI-centric experiences through visual intelligence. This follows the successful launch of AirPods Pro 3 last fall, which included significant improvements.
AirPods Pro 3 was released in 2025, following the first model in 2019 and its successor in 2022. Apple typically releases new AirPods Pro every three years, but rumors indicate another model is on the way this year.
One of the anticipated features is the addition of IR cameras, which could enable hand gesture support. Additionally, a next-gen H3 chip may debut, likely enhancing the camera capabilities.
The new AirPods are projected to be priced around $299, which is $50 more than the AirPods Pro 3. Expectations were that Apple would market this model as a high-end AirPods Pro 3.
However, recent reports suggest that ‘AirPods Ultra’ branding is more likely. This aligns with Apple’s strategy of expanding its Ultra lineup.
Macworld reported that Apple intends to use ‘Ultra’ branding for new iPhone and Mac models this year. The foldable iPhone is expected to be called iPhone Ultra, as confirmed by several leakers.
The upcoming MacBook Pro redesign will also be termed MacBook Ultra. If both products are branded as ‘Ultra,’ the likelihood of an ‘AirPods Ultra’ launch this year increases.
Mark Gurman hinted at this development last month, stating that the new AirPods will represent a “major new product category.” While it’s possible Apple may opt for branding like ‘AirPods Pro 3 with AI,’ ‘AirPods Ultra’ appears to fit better with the naming convention of other products.
