dailyloe.com – Alexander Volkov, a top contender in the UFC heavyweight division, expressed his skepticism about Alex Pereira’s upcoming fight against Ciryl Gane. Pereira, stepping up from light heavyweight, is set to debut in the heavyweight category on June 14 at UFC Freedom Fights 250.
Volkov (39-11 MMA, 13-5 UFC) believes that Pereira may struggle with Gane’s fighting style. He stated, “Honestly, Ciryl is more favorite right now. He has really great footwork. I respect Alex Pereira and his power, but I don’t know how he will show up in the heavyweight division.”
Volkov outlined that Pereira needs to pressure his opponents and counterattack effectively. However, he feels Gane’s movement and striking style will make this difficult. He explained, “Ciryl Gane don’t give him the opportunity. He just punches and kicks and moves a lot. It’s a hard thing for Alex Pereira to solve in the fight. I’m not sure he can do this.”
This fight comes as Volkov prepares to return on the main card of UFC 328, taking on Waldo Cortes-Acosta (17-2 MMA, 10-2 UFC) in Newark, N.J. Volkov previously fought Gane in December 2024, losing a split decision in a match many believed he had won.
Despite his recent successes, Volkov admits it is challenging to see Gane competing for the title. He said, “I’m trying to stay calm. I can’t let it affect me. I can’t do anything outside of things that depend on me.”
Volkov acknowledged the competitive nature of the heavyweight division and noted that UFC may favor Gane politically for the title fight. He understands his current position and is focused on improving his performance to earn a title shot.
