Trump Claims Iran Permitted 10 Oil Tankers Through Strait of Hormuz
Trump said the U.S has "very substantial talks going on with respect to Iran," though Tehran has denied direct talks have taken place.

President Donald Trump claimed on Thursday that Iran permitted ten oil tankers to transit the Strait of Hormuz this week as a gift to the United States. He made these remarks during a White House cabinet meeting, providing new details on earlier vague statements. This development follows weeks of heightened tensions and a near-blockade of the critical waterway. The strait is a global chokepoint for roughly 20% of the world’s oil supply.

The president described the Iranian action as a gesture of goodwill and reliability. He stated Iran initially offered eight tankers before apologizing and adding two more. These comments were framed as part of what Trump called ‘very substantial talks’ with Iran. However, the Iranian government has consistently denied any direct negotiations are occurring with American officials.

U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff confirmed diplomatic outreach from regional actors seeking a peaceful resolution. He noted the U.S. has presented a 15-point framework for a potential peace deal. This framework was reportedly delivered to Iran via Pakistan, which is acting as a mediator. The specifics of this American proposal have not been made public.

In response, Iranian state media reported Tehran rejected a U.S. ceasefire offer this week. Instead, Iran submitted its own list of conditions for ending the conflict. A key reported Iranian demand is sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz. Control of the strait has been a central issue since hostilities effectively closed it nearly four weeks ago.

The closure has triggered significant global supply concerns, particularly in Asia-Pacific nations. Earlier this week, Trump suggested the strait could be jointly controlled by himself and Iran’s Supreme Leader. The ongoing situation underscores the strait’s vital role in international energy security and global trade flows.
